(Asteraceae)
Western Yarrow is a common and long-lived flowering perennial that starts blooming in April and doesn't stop until it's time for snow again. Yarrow has no real preferences, found in about every ecotype and community. Tolerates poor soil, garden soil, drought, irrigation, sun, shade, etc.
It can be considered aggressive when planted without competition, but in a healthy wild yard or garden it does not outcompete other established vegetation. It is also easy to remove/control.
Growing around 12-18" tall it can turn into a small creeping shrub, stay as a specimen ornamental, or morph into a walkable groundcover.
It is also fire resistant with low ignitability and can be used as a fire break in native and permaculture yards. High deer resistance. Foliage and blooms are aromatic and repel mosquitos.
Lawn replacement: Mixing Yarrow with Sheep Fescue and/or other cool season grasses gives a nice full lawn that's completely native and provides food for pollinators. The yarrow is drought tolerant and will stay green throughout the summer with minimal to zero irrigation depending on location. Handles trampling as well as a normal lawn would and can be mowed regularly if you're still going for a traditional look.
We recommend mowing once after the plants seed to keep the lawn 'full' or don't mow at all.
Collected: Summit County, Utah
Wild/Nursery: Wild
Seasonality: April-November
Germination: Germinates readily, plant outside Spring, Summer or Fall.
