(Asteraceae)
Silver Sagebrush, Artemisia cana, softer and less woody than Big sagebrush, this aromatic evergreen shrub is widely distributed and grows well in grasslands, floodplains, and montane forests -- usually at higher elevations where it likes a higher water table than other sagebrush and can withstand periodic flooding. Perfect for increasing biodiversity, revegetation, native yards, erosion control and more.
Most commonly found east of the continental divide in smaller stands than you would see Big sagebrush but is found on the East side of the Cascades and Sierra Nevada as well. Growing 2-5ft tall.
Collected In: Summit County, Utah
Wild or Homegrown: Wild
Seasonality: Evergreen, mid-Summer bloom
Germination: No pre-treatment required. Sow on the surface or up to 1/8" deep then cover with a thin layer of sand. Surface broadcasting onto snow or soil in the Fall or early Winter and then pressing down or raking the seed into the soil produces the best results. Seedlings are easy to establish but don't tolerate root disturbance and might need some protection from predators
