Artemisia cana ssp. viscidula (Mountain Silver Sagebrush)

Artemisia cana ssp. viscidula is the only subspecies in Utah. Softer and less woody than Big Sagebrush, this aromatic evergreen shrub has a large distribution with scattered populations in floodplains, river terraces, grasslands, and montane forests -- usually at mid to higher elevations where it likes a higher water table than other sagebrush and can withstand periodic flooding.

Seasonality: Evergreen, mid-Summer bloom

Germination: No pre-treatment required. Sow on the surface or up to 1/8" deep then cover with a thin layer of sand. Surface broadcasting onto snow or soil in the Fall or early Winter and then pressing down or raking the seed into the soil produces the best results. Seedlings are easy to establish but don't tolerate much root disturbance and might need some protection from predators
