(Asteraceae)
A more drought tolerant sunflower found growing on rocky hillsides amongst oak and shrub-steppe. Keystone species of mountain shrub communities. Try planting with Artemisia, Optunita, Symphoricarpos and Gambel's Oak for a wildlife and pollinator forward start to a native mountain yard.
Excellent choice for pollinator gardens and mesic native yards. Not great planted as a monoculture but rather in many small patches throughout your space.
Collected In: Wasatch County, Utah
Wild or Homegrown: Wild
Seasonality: May-August
Germination: 60 days cool-moist(37-41°) stratification either in the fridge folded in single paper towel. Seeds may germinate before 60 days; if it's only a few leave them in there a little longer, if they all start to germinate then pull the bag and sow. Best down in at least a 3" pot to start. Or plant outdoors around the first snowfall.
