Found growing in shady aspen, maple and serviceberry woodlands with a snowberry dominated understory, along with agastache, aquilegia, and geranium.
Choice species for woodland or shadier plantings and can be used as taller groundcover. It is not competitive and will happily grow from within dense shrubs that snowberry and serviceberry.
Seeds are sharp and may act like some dangerous grass seed awns. Either skip this plant if you have young children or dogs, or cut the inflorescences off once they are finished blooming.
