Pollinator Host Plant Kit - 50 Plants

This 50 plant kit is full of host plants and shoulder season blooms specifically curated for the Wasatch Back. Made to fill 100-250 sqft depending on how dense you plant.

Pickup for early September to align somewhat with the USU pollinator grant. This is an excellent kit as is, but is also made to pair and add value to the pollinator grant program. 

Achnatherum hymenoides (Indian Ricegrass) *5                    -Beautiful cover for ground dwelling pollinators and a host to various Skippers

Artemisia arbuscula (Low Sagebrush) *3                                -Low, well mannered Sagebrush. A. arbuscula is used as a primary and secondary host by butterflies in the Papilio genus.

Astragalus argophyllus v. martinii (Silverleaf Milkvetch) *3

Astragalus miser v. oblongifolius (Timber Milkvetch) *3

Oenothera flava v. flava (Yellow Evening Primrose) *3          -Host plant to Sphinxmoths, moths, and a wide variety of generalist pollinators. Western Evening Primrose Sweat Bee(Lasioglossum) specializes in the sticky thread bound pollen and rely exclusively on Oenothera.

Oenothera cespitosa ssp. marginata (Tufted Evening Primrose) *3                                                                                  -Host plant and food source for Hawkmoths and various other moth species. Usually open in the early morning for other native bees. 

Rudbeckia occidentalis (Western Coneflower) *2                  -Abundant nectar, attracts vast amounts and variety. Host plant for various various moths and butterflies

Salix scouleri (Scouler's Willow) *1                                           -Crucial and massive source of early season nectar and pollen for pollinators. Hosts dozens of butterfly and moths species. Hoverflies are often around. 

Symphyotrichum ascendens (Western Aster) *2                    -Crucial late season pollen and nectar in abundance. Keystone species

Sphaeralcea munroa (Munro Globemallow) *3                       -Globemallow bees depend on Sphaeralcea and use the genus almost exclusively. 

To enhance this kit, 

Yarrow will provide Summer-Fall food and habitat for hoverflies.

Lomatium graveolens will bolster swallowtail habitat even more.

Blanketflower is always an excellent choice for mid-Summer color and various pollinators.

Viola or Ranunculus will add more to early Spring 

Cleome serrulata and Baileya multiradiata are excellent annuals that attract uncommon flies and valuable small beetles
